Eglish, Rath & Drumcullen Gws Ltd was initially founded in 2000. The scheme is located in south Offaly and supplies portable drinking water to a large area north of the town of Birr.
Between the years 2000 to 2004 works consisted of fundraising, Engineering Surveys investigative works and preparation of contract documents for tendering. In March 2004 the first pipelaying took place and so began phase one of the project. This consisted of a pumped supply of portable water to each dwelling. In 2006/07 the reservoir was constructed and phase 2 of the pipelaying began the addition of the reservoir allow for a gravity feed to each dwelling. The source for the scheme is located at Springfield, Rath and consists of bore hole wells. The water is pumped to the Reservoir and a gravity feed through a distribution pipe network. The scheme supplies approx 435 domestic dwellings 268 land & farm connections and 8 commercial businesses. The water scheme is a relative new scheme and was the brainchild of Mick Spain who initiated the setting up of the scheme after the very dry summer of 1995.

Our Structure
The original management structure within the group water scheme sector is still very much relevant today. Even though the business has changed a lot, the voluntary ethos is still very much to the fore. ERD GWS has at present an 10 member voluntary committee that make the decisions on policy and development which allows the scheme to continue to provide a quality product in a constant and dependable manner.

Together, these committee members, as well as Chairman freely give of their time to attend monthly management meetings which decide on whatever the most recent issues are relating to the ongoing operation and prosperity of the scheme. are proud of the quality and continuity of the water they supply, and endeavour at all times to reply promptly to any queries members may have, however without the goodwill shown towards the scheme by its members this job would be a lot more difficult.

Our vision is to continue to supply quality portable water to our customers, improve our water conservation measures, provide for additional customers in the community and to introduce renewable energy systems in supplying water to our customers thereby reduce our carbon footprint.
